Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has officially launched its first Indian manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, marking a major milestone in its $2 billion investment plan for India and expansion into Asian markets.

The $500 million plant, situated within Tamil Nadu’s industrial corridor, will start with an annual production capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles, scalable up to 150,000 units.

VinFast chose the site after assessing 15 locations across six Indian states, citing Tamil Nadu’s strong infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strategic port connectivity—key factors in its plan to develop the facility as an export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

VinFast sold nearly 97,000 vehicles in 2024 — a threefold increase from the previous year — though 90% of those sales were within Vietnam.

Looking ahead, the company aims to deliver 200,000 vehicles globally in 2025.

With its entry into India’s rapidly expanding EV market, VinFast will face stiff competition. The affordable segment is currently led by domestic giants Tata Motors and Mahindra, while Hyundai and MG Motor dominate the premium space.
