The Central Government has issued operational guidelines for the deployment of approximately 72,300 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across India under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, which has a total outlay of Rs 10,900 crore, including Rs 2,000 crore earmarked for infrastructure deployment.

The guidelines propose a tiered subsidy structure to promote the installation of EV charging infrastructure across different types of locations. Government-owned or managed premises, such as offices, residential complexes, hospitals, and educational institutions, will be eligible for a 100 per cent subsidy on both upstream infrastructure and EV charging equipment, provided the chargers are accessible to the public for free.

For other locations, including cities and highways under state or central government control, as well as public sector undertakings like railway stations, airports, metro stations, bus terminals, municipal parking lots, public sector ports, and toll plazas, the subsidy will cover 80 per cent of upstream infrastructure costs and 70 per cent of EV supply equipment costs.

Additionally, public charging points in urban streets, shopping malls, market complexes, highways, and expressways will receive 80 per cent subsidy on upstream infrastructure, according to the operational norms.

The scheme aims to accelerate EV adoption by expanding the country’s public charging network, ensuring convenient access, and supporting India’s push towards sustainable and green mobility.
