In a major boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that Assam will become part of the global semiconductor ecosystem by 2026. The statement came during her visit to Tata Electronics’ upcoming Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) centre at Jagiroad in Morigaon district earlier this week.

Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sitharaman reviewed the progress of the ₹27,000-crore Tata OSAT project — a key component of India’s semiconductor manufacturing mission. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce 48 million chips per day and create over 25,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and up to 13,000 indirect employment opportunities. The first phase is slated for commissioning by April 2026.

Describing the project as a “cornerstone for India’s semiconductor future,” Sitharaman said Assam has demonstrated remarkable foresight in bringing advanced electronics manufacturing to the Northeast. “Just ten days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a ₹1 lakh crore fund for research and development. This fund is accessible to both government and private sector entities, promoting innovation and technological growth across India,” she noted.

Tata Electronics CEO Randhir Thakur presented an update on the project’s development, highlighting its transformative potential for the region’s industrial ecosystem. He underscored that the OSAT centre will drive high-technology manufacturing, generate skilled employment, and attract new investments to the Northeast.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude to Sitharaman and the central government for their continued support, calling the project a “game changer” for Assam’s industrial landscape. “This facility will not only create jobs but also lay the foundation for a vibrant electronics and semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the state,” he said.

During her visit, the Finance Minister also interacted with local entrepreneurs and students, encouraging the youth to actively participate in Assam’s emerging industrial and technological sectors. She, along with the Chief Minister, paid tribute to J.N. Tata and planted red sandal saplings at the project site, symbolising sustainability and growth.

The Jagiroad OSAT facility aligns with India’s broader semiconductor mission, launched in 2021, which has rapidly advanced from vision to execution. The government’s ₹76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has already drawn major investments across the country.

A significant milestone was achieved earlier this year with the rollout of India’s first “Made in India” semiconductor chip at CG-Semi’s OSAT Pilot Line Facility in Sanand, Gujarat. So far, 10 semiconductor projects with a cumulative investment exceeding ₹1.60 lakh crore have been approved across six states — Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is now working on the next phase — Semicon 2.0 — in consultation with multiple ministries, to further strengthen India’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

With the Tata OSAT Centre set to anchor this mission in the Northeast, Assam is poised to emerge as a new hub for high-value electronics manufacturing, driving India’s goal of technological self-reliance and global competitiveness.
