Hyundai Motor Group, in collaboration with Enowa—NEOM’s energy and water subsidiary—has successfully completed a groundbreaking hydrogen mobility trial in Trojena, NEOM’s mountainous region. This marks the first deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles in high-altitude terrain, underscoring the Group’s leadership in hydrogen mobility innovation.
As part of the trial, Hyundai Motor Group operated its hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) coach bus, UNIVERSE, along a challenging mountainous route in Trojena, navigating elevations up to 2,080 meters and gradients as steep as 24 percent. The route simulated future passenger transport between NEOM’s core business district and Trojena, successfully showcasing the vehicle’s performance and the viability of hydrogen mobility in high-altitude environments.
This milestone follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in September 2024 with NEOM’s Mobility sector to explore the deployment of next-generation zero-emission mobility solutions within the region.
With Enowa recently establishing the region’s first hydrogen refueling station—designed to support a variety of hydrogen-powered vehicles—Hyundai Motor Group operated its UNIVERSE Fuel Cell bus for VIP transport in NEOM from October to December last year.
This successful trial represents a key step in advancing Saudi Arabia’s broader vision for economic transformation and future-focused industries. Building on this milestone, Hyundai Motor Group and NEOM are positioned to expand their collaboration in sustainable mobility solutions, reinforcing their shared commitment to a decarbonized future.
In partnership with NEOM and Enowa, Hyundai Motor Group has released a video documenting its hydrogen mobility trial, featuring the UNIVERSE Fuel Cell bus navigating Trojena’s rugged mountain terrain. The film includes interviews with project partners and showcases the Group’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility in NEOM by demonstrating hydrogen technology in real-world, high-altitude conditions.
Hyundai Motor Group’s presence in Saudi Arabia builds on decades of hydrogen technology development dating back to the late 1990s. This latest achievement reaffirms the Group’s long-term dedication to hydrogen mobility, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 and global climate objectives.
Hyundai Motor Group is advancing the global energy transition through its dedicated hydrogen brand and business platform, HTWO. By harnessing its end-to-end expertise in hydrogen—from production and storage to application— HTWO is expanding as an open platform for collaboration, investment, and partnership, reinforcing the Group’s contribution to building a viable hydrogen economy.
