‘Auto Semicon Korea’ by Hyundai Mobis

To strengthen Korea’s automotive semiconductor competitiveness and build a self-sustaining ecosystem, Hyundai Mobis has brought together more than 20 companies and research institutions in the country’s first private-sector-led “K-automotive semiconductor” cooperation.

On September 29, Hyundai Mobis hosted the inaugural Auto Semicon Korea (ASK) forum at the DoubleTree by Hilton Seoul Pangyo. The event gathered 23 participants, including automakers, fabless companies, foundries, design houses, packaging companies, and research institutions. Notable attendees included executives from Samsung Electronics, LX Semicon, SK keyfoundry, DB HiTek, GlobalFoundries, Dongwoon Anatech, and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI).

Building a Domestic Value Chain

Until now, Korea’s automotive semiconductor sector has relied heavily on imports from Europe, North America, and Japan. With ASK, Hyundai Mobis and its partners aim to localize core technologies, foster collaboration across the value chain, and create new business opportunities.

Hyundai Mobis President Lee Gyu-suk emphasized the company’s dual role as both a fabless semiconductor designer and supply chain manager, positioning it to lead this transformation. “We are securing independent semiconductor design capabilities while pursuing joint development with fabless companies and design houses, and expanding cooperation with major foundries,” Lee said.

Accelerating Development Cycles

Park Chul-hong, Executive Vice President and Head of the Semiconductor Business at Hyundai Mobis, highlighted how integrating semiconductor and controller development could shorten electric vehicle drive system development by nearly two years. Hyundai Mobis is already mass-producing 16 types of semiconductors—including power, drive, communication, sensor, and data processing chips—through external foundries, reaching a volume of 20 million units this year.

Forum Expansion and Future Plans

Starting next year, ASK will expand to include startups, associations, and institutions with semiconductor expertise. Hyundai Mobis also plans to share its ISO 26262-certified R&D expertise to support domestic companies transitioning from consumer electronics into mobility semiconductors.

GlobalFoundries and Dongwoon Anatech, both ASK participants, have already completed joint developments with Hyundai Mobis and are preparing for mass production of next-generation automotive semiconductors.

According to global market research, the automotive semiconductor market is expected to grow at 9% annually, reaching $135 billion by 2030. Hyundai Mobis’ focus areas—infotainment, connectivity, ADAS, and electrification—are projected to make up 70% of this market.

With ASK, Hyundai Mobis is positioning Korea as a key player in the rapidly growing automotive semiconductor landscape, driving localization, innovation, and global competitiveness.
