The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed mandatory installation of Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems (AVAS) in all electric cars, buses, and trucks, starting October 1, 2027, as part of efforts to enhance road safety.
According to a draft notification, all new models of electric passenger and goods vehicles manufactured after October 2026 must be fitted with AVAS. This system emits an artificial sound to alert pedestrians and other road users about the presence of otherwise silent electric vehicles.
The notification further specifies: “On and after October 1, 2026, in the case of new models, and October 1, 2027, in the case of existing models, electrified vehicles of category M and N shall be fitted with AVAS meeting requirements of audibility as per AIS-173, as amended from time to time.”
Category M vehicles include electric cars and buses designed for passenger transport, while Category N vehicles comprise electric trucks and goods carriers.
With this move, India aligns with global standards, as countries including the US, Japan, and several European Union nations have already made AVAS mandatory in hybrid and electric vehicles.
