Renault Group is strengthening its presence in India by acquiring Nissan’s remaining 51% stake in their joint Chennai plant, Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL), becoming its sole owner. The plant will now be fully consolidated into Renault Group’s financial statements.
This step follows the opening of Renault’s largest design center outside France, announced in April, and the launch of the New Renault Triber — the first of four upcoming models under its new product strategy. The company aims to boost domestic sales and expand exports from India. Stéphane Deblaise will take over as CEO of Renault Group in India starting September 1, 2025, to lead this transformation.
Renault Group Strengthens India Strategy with Full Ownership of Chennai Plant
With complete control of its Chennai facility, Renault reinforces India’s role in its global growth plans.
Renault Group has acquired full ownership of its Chennai plant, known for its operational excellence, by purchasing Nissan’s remaining 51% stake in Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL). This move supports the Group’s ambition to position India as a key hub for international expansion.
In addition to the plant, Renault continues to leverage a leading engineering center in India, jointly owned with Nissan, which plays a vital role in designing and adapting vehicles for both local and global markets.
As part of its International Game Plan 2027, Renault is accelerating its expansion in India—a rapidly growing market where over half the population is under 28. As the world’s third-largest automotive market, India represents a strategic territory for innovation, youth-driven trends, and the transformation of mobility.
Renault’s ambition is marked by a major product offensive, starting with the launch of the New Triber and followed by three additional models.
Despite Renault’s full ownership of the Chennai plant, its partnership with Nissan will continue. RNAIPL will maintain production of Nissan vehicles as originally planned.
François Provost, CEO Renault Group, said, “India is a key market for Renault Group. Over the past 14 years, we have successfully established the Renault brand thanks to our dedicated teams and partners, reaching peak sales of over 100,000 vehicles sold per year. India also plays a vital role in our global R&D footprint. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India. Stéphane Deblaise, with his strong international experience and deep knowledge across our entire value chain, is ideally positioned to design and implement our strategy in the region.”
