SiCSem Pvt Ltd will lay the foundation stone for Odisha’s second semiconductor manufacturing unit on November 1, marking a major milestone in the state’s growing presence in India’s semiconductor landscape. The company has been allotted 23 acres of land by the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) at Info Valley for setting up a compound semiconductor facility under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
SiCSem is one of two semiconductor projects approved in the state, alongside RIR Power Electronics Ltd., which is developing India’s first silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility with an investment of ₹620 crore.
Driving India’s Chipmaking Ambitions
With an investment of ₹2,067 crore, SiCSem’s new facility will process 60,000 SiC wafers annually and package around 96 million MOSFETs and diodes. These components will cater to high-growth sectors such as electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy, and smart grid systems.
The project is expected to create about 1,000 direct jobs and several indirect employment opportunities through its supply chain and ancillary units. Once operational, the plant will help position Odisha as a key semiconductor hub while bolstering India’s Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) ecosystem.
Strengthening R&D and Collaboration
To advance indigenous innovation in semiconductor materials, SiCSem has established the SiC Research and Innovation Centre (SICRIC) at IIT-Bhubaneswar with an investment of ₹64 crore. Inaugurated in January during the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, the centre focuses on advancing SiC technology through collaborative research and development.
Promoters led by Ranjit Pendurthi, Managing Director of Archean Chemical Industries Ltd., recently met Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Semicon India 2025 in New Delhi to discuss strategies for fast-tracking project implementation. The foundation-laying ceremony is expected to be attended by the Chief Minister and Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw.
