Simple Energy has become India’s first electric vehicle manufacturer to commercially produce heavy rare earth-free motors, a move that strengthens domestic EV supply chains and reduces reliance on imported critical materials. The motors are manufactured at the company’s 200,000-square-foot facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
Heavy rare earth elements, used in traditional EV motors for their high torque density and compact size, are sourced from a limited number of countries, making the global EV supply chain vulnerable to disruptions. Simple Energy’s new motor technology replaces these materials with alternative compounds and employs proprietary algorithms to manage heat and torque delivery, delivering performance comparable to conventional systems.
Founded in 2019 by Suhas Rajkumar and Shreshth Mishra, Simple Energy currently produces electric scooters including the Simple ONE Gen 1.5 with a range of 248 kilometers and the Simple OneS with a range of 181 kilometers. The company operates 46 showrooms across India and plans to expand with 150 new stores and 200 service centers by the end of fiscal 2025.
Simple Energy has raised over $41 million from family offices and individual investors and is preparing for an initial public offering in FY27, targeting $350 million to fund product development, manufacturing expansion, and market growth.
The development aligns with the Indian government’s push for domestic EV manufacturing and reduces dependence on imported heavy rare earth materials, bolstering India’s EV industry ambitions.
